Gujarat Lions is a professional T20 cricket team that competes in Indian Premier League and was introduced to replace one of two IPL franchises either Chennai Super Kings or Rajasthan Royals. The Gujarat Lions franchise represents Indian state Gujarat’s Rajkot city. The official slogan of team is “Jalsa Jeet Ka”.
One of the leading smartphone manufacturer companies “Intex Technologies” purchased the franchise for 10 Crore INR in a reverse bid process. The home ground of Gujarat Lions is Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium which is situated in Rajkot.
The official team, logo and captain were announced on 2nd February 2016 in an event in Delhi. Suresh Raina was named the captain of team. Australia’s Brad Hodge was appointed head coach of Gujarat Lions for Vivo IPL. First draft of players for two new franchises, was held in December 2015 in which Gujarat Lions picked Suresh Raina, Brendon McCullum, Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo and James Faulkner.
Gujarat Lions stood top in the point table of IPLT20 2016 season and played knockout games. Team lost both playoff matches and knocked out from qualifying for IPL-9 final. They secured third position overall.
