ICC World Twenty20 2016 final match hero Carlos Brathwaite is appointed skipper of West Indies squad for the upcoming two t20s against India in Florida. Brathwaite was named captain of West Indies t20 team after Darren Sammy’s omission from the national squad. Sammy was the captain of WI in world t20 2016 in India while Brathwaite smashed 4 sixes in the last over of final to become twenty20 world cup champions.
WICB Chairman of selectors Courtney Browne said, “Brathwaite is one of the most talented players in the T20 format of the game and his humble and committed approach to the game can inspire young and upcoming players. We are looking forward to a competitive series against India in these matches.”
West Indies and India are set to play international twenty20 matches for the first time in Florida, USA on 27 and 28 August. The selection of Caribbean team is made on the basis of current performance of players.
As per West Indies Cricket Board release, “With regards to Sammy’s omission from the squad, the Chairman [of selectors Courtney Browne] noted that the named-squad was selected purely on players’ performances.”
Chris Gayle, Marlon Samuel, Andre Russell have been included in the roster. All-rounder Kieron Pollard is returning to the side as he was axed from world t20 2016 West Indies squad.
