Indian Premier League governing council meeting held today to discuss player retention policy guidelines for Vivo IPL 2018. Along with IPL Chairman Rajiv Shukla and Committee of Administrators (COA) were present during the meeting which has finalized players retention policy, salary cap and player regulations.

Let’s have a look at the rules and players retention policy for IPL 2018 auction.

There will be 8 teams Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kolkata Knight Riders, Delhi Daredevils, Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Kings XI Punjab, Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad taking part in the competition.

Each team can retain a maximum of 5 players from their previous squad.

There are two methods by following which teams can retain players:

  • Direct retention
  • Right to match

Direct Retention

A maximum of 3 players can be retained directly by a franchise before the auction.

Right To Match (RTM)

Right to Match is an option provided to team owners for retaining players during the auction. According to this if a team doesn’t retain a player and the player goes into auction, then during the auction if a team bids higher to buy the player, then current team can retain the player for that bid amount.

For example if Royal Challengers Bangalore doesn’t retain Chris Gayle before auction, and Gayle goes into the players auction. For instance, Sunrisers Hyderabad bids 4 Crore to buy Gayle in the auction. Then RCB has option RTM to have Chris Gayle in the squad again after paying 4 Crore. SRH won’t get Gayle despite highest bid.

Each team can retain a maximum of 3 capped Indian players, 2 overseas players and 2 uncapped Indian players.

In the retention of 5 players, teams have two choices like they can retain 3 players which will give them 2 Right To Match option. Meanwhile other choice suggests 2 players and 3 RTM. No team can have more than three players retain directly or Right To Match.

Retention policy for Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals

Both CSK and RR can retain players from 2015 Indian Premier League squad. Both franchises can retain 5-5 players from IPL 2015 squad as they were not part of 2016 and 2017 seasons. Alternatively both teams can pick players from Rising Pune Supergiant and Gujarat Lions rosters.

Players Salary Cap

Total salary cap for 2018 IPLT20 is 80 Crore. If a team retains 3 players, they have to spend a total 33 crore that sums up 15 crore for 1st retained player, 11 crore for 2nd player and 7 crore rs for 3rd player.

If a team retains 2 players, they have to pay 21 crore. 12.5 crore rs. for first players while 8.5 for second retained player.

If team retains only player, they have to pay only 12.5 crore.

In another selection if a team retains an uncapped player, then they have to pay 3 crore rs.

Each team can have maximum 25 players and minimum 18 players in their roster for 2018 Vivo IPLT20. A maximum of 8 overseas players can be in the squad.
