West Indies women’s cricket team have created history on Sunday at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens stadium as they have beaten three time title defending champion Australia women’s in the final of ICC Women’s World Twenty20 2016. This is the first occasion when West Indies ladies have won WT20 crown. In the final match, they defeated Australia by 8 wickets to become champions.
Skipper Stafanie Taylor and opener Hayley Matthews scored brilliant half centuries to take West Indies towards the wining target which was 149. Matthews made 6 while Taylor scored 59 runs to give West Indies women’s an excellent start in the run chase.
Australia women’s made 148 runs in the crucial final match after winning the toss. Opener Elyse Villani and captain Meg Lanning scored fifties to lead Aussies towards a big total in prospects of women’s cricket. But on this batting track, West Indies chased the total easily with 3 balls remaining in the match. Hayley Matthews was awarded player of the match for her match winning innings.
For scoring 246 runs in the ICC Women’s world t20 2016 and taking 8 wickets, West Indies women captain Stafaine Taylor was named player of the tournament.
